I just installed a MySQL 5.1 server on Ubuntu machine. after installation the server should automatically start but it does not start and gives me an error start: Job failed to start . Even when I manually tried to start it using service MySQL start, it gives me the same error.

Help is always appreciated !!

Are there more details in your mysql.err log? – atxdba Mar 30 '12 at 20:24
mysql.err file is completely empty. It has 0B size. – vinny Mar 30 '12 at 20:50
Hi @vinny, check /var/log/mysql/error.log. – Dimitre Radoulov Mar 30 '12 at 21:44
Try a safe start of mysql. – hjpotter92 Apr 1 '12 at 8:03
open a terimal and do tail -f /var/log/syslog, try again to run mysql and add the info from the terminal here... .. did you try to do that as sudo right? sudo service mysql start – maniat1k Apr 2 '12 at 0:32
