Because of its security flaws, I need to remediate Java JDK 1.4.2. Based on this Oracle Blog, and encouraged by Do Oracle databases use Java internally and this Certification Matrix (opens an Excel spreadsheet), it looks like it may be possible to remediate Java JDK 1.4.2 without making any changes to the underlying DB.

There are apparently two methods for removing the security flaws:

  • applying the Sun JDK 1.4.2 Update (via Oracle Patch 8453300). Or,
  • upgrading to Java JDK 1.5.0 (version 16+).

It looks like the first method should be performed with a DBA, but the second might be done by any competent technical person. Is that correct?

Have you encountered any problems with either method?

Are there other ways to remove Java JDK 1.4.2?
