A small and old Windows 2003 server, just crashed; from the backup only the .bak files are available. A new server will be built, however, as the database is very small (20MB) and the Windows server was also used for printing and file sharing (5 users), I was wondering what platform would be worth it to start from (server platform and SQL server version). Maybe to make things easier it could be wise to use a simple Windows 7/8 machine with SQL server installed. BTW, clients are running Access 2003 (ADODB/adp).

Your thoughts?

The obvious answer would be Windows 2012 and SQL 2012, however you are going to be limited to SQL 2008/R2 given that you are trying to bring the database up from SQL 2000 (and that is assuming that the database does not utilize code features that were removed). If you are going to keep SQL with the file/print sharing services I recommend sticking with a server OS. 2008 might be the best way to go and then figure out a route for yourself to 2012. – Nic Mar 6 at 16:52

At that size, even a virtual machine with SQL Express will do just fine. You could even run it on your machine and not feel it :). – Marian Mar 6 at 16:58
So Windows Server 2008 and MS SQL 2008...ok! There shouldn't be any code adjustment in the Access project , assuming the Windows Server & SQL Server names will be the same. Correct? – Riccardo Mar 6 at 16:58

No no no no no. Get the newest version you can. Given you were on 2003 + 2000 for this long, do you really want to start on an OS/database combination that is already 5 years old? – Aaron Bertrand Mar 6 at 16:59
