Mysql query browser used to work fine then suddenly stopped working: cannot connect to database server. Your connection attempt failed for user 'brianp' from your host to server at viper:3306: Could not open database.

Workbench -> manage connections, select viper. Shows hostname viper, port 3306, std tcp/ip, username brianp, password -> store in vault (input password). test connection -> Connection parameters are correct.

Command line works perfectly: d:\pic>mysql -u brianp -h viper -p asset -P 3306 Enter password: ** Welcome to the MySQL monitor...

Perl connects with DBI::DBD::Mysql as usual. Toad connects perfectly as always.

I can start and stop the server with the server administration part of the workbench. windoz task manager -> services verifies mysql service stopping/starting.

Tried unistalling mysql workbench 5.2 ce and reinstalling it. I would rather not monkey with the server as it is working flawlessly.

ping viper works and shows 192.168.0.4, my static ip address for my local net: d:\pic>ipconfig | grep 192.168.0.4 IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.4

d:\pic>grep viper C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc/hosts 192.168.0.4 viper

Mysql system var-> datadir=m:\mysql\data. I have ownership of M:, mysql dir and data dir and have given full (777 type) permissions to everybody. data/mysql/user.frm, MYI and MYD are also owned by me and have full control for everybody.

I have tried my static, local IP address, 192.168.0.4, the one the cable modem assigns via dhcp, 192.168.1.???, and localhost 127.0.0.1. None work.

In Toad (tcp, localhost, brianp P_W, asset, 3306), I gave mysql database, user table, user brianp hosts localhost, % and 127.0.0.1, same password on all and Y on every Y/N field.

looking for all 3306 or mysql network connections:

d:\pic>netstat -n -a|grep 3306 TCP 0.0.0.0:3306 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING TCP 127.0.0.1:3306 127.0.0.1:52469 ESTABLISHED TCP 127.0.0.1:3306 127.0.0.1:52470 ESTABLISHED TCP 127.0.0.1:3306 127.0.0.1:52588 ESTABLISHED TCP 127.0.0.1:3306 127.0.0.1:52589 ESTABLISHED TCP 127.0.0.1:3306 127.0.0.1:52623 ESTABLISHED TCP 127.0.0.1:3306 127.0.0.1:52628 ESTABLISHED TCP 127.0.0.1:52469 127.0.0.1:3306 ESTABLISHED TCP 127.0.0.1:52470 127.0.0.1:3306 ESTABLISHED TCP 127.0.0.1:52588 127.0.0.1:3306 ESTABLISHED TCP 127.0.0.1:52589 127.0.0.1:3306 ESTABLISHED TCP 127.0.0.1:52623 127.0.0.1:3306 ESTABLISHED TCP 127.0.0.1:52628 127.0.0.1:3306 ESTABLISHED TCP [::]:3306 [::]:0 LISTENING

turned off firewall and antivirus and tried to connect. Nada.

M:\mysql\data\viper.err shows nothing after failing connection, shows: ready for connections. Version: '5.5.19' socket: '' port: 3306

d:\pic>mysql -u root -p -h 127.0.0.1 -P 3306 Enter password: *** Welcome to the MySQL monitor. ... works for hosts viper, 192.168.0. 4, localhost and 127.0.0. 1.

I can do everything I really need to do with either a Perl script or with Toad, but the mysql query browser does have its uses when it works. It's a brain teaser.

What am I overlooking?
