Database Administrators Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for database professionals who wish to improve their database skills and learn from others in the community. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have a field of CLOB data type which has data including carriage returns and line feeds (chr(10) and chr(13)).

I want to be able to encode these because currently when I export data using SQL*Plus, the line feeds affecting the formatting such that the parsing of the output breaks. Changing chr(10) to \n and chr(13) to \r would be ideal.

I tried to achieve this using REPLACE() but I got an ORA-00932: Inconsistent datatypes error.

I don't have access to the database server. We're stuck on Oracle 8i.
