I have two SQL Servers (2008 R2), and merge replication between them, one being the publisher and the other subscriber. I noticed that downloads are happening every minute, but uploads are happening every 10-15 minutes. I wonder why is this happening. There is very little activity on the subscriber, in average one change per minute. Does the subscriber batches uploads and only uploads them only when the batch reaches certain size? What can I do to determine the cause of this behavior.

No, Merge does not send changes when the batch reaches a certain size. The Merge Agent will enumerate and synchronize all pending changes when it runs, regardless if the number of changes have reached the batch size. Something else is going on. Are your articles filtered? Are you performing data validation? – Brandon Williams Oct 16 '13 at 3:39
Enable trace flag 101 ( or enable verbose agent logging ( to determine where the Merge Agent is spending the majority of its time. – Brandon Williams Oct 16 '13 at 3:43
