Is there a way to get Oracle Text to index an XML document's mark up and not just element's PCDATA?

I have a requirement to allow users to text search a whole XML document, mark up included, but I can't seem to get this to work with Oracle Text. I've been digging through the docs but haven't found any filter or index parameters which cause the indexing to take mark up into account.

I'm aware of Oracle's XML querying abilities for using xpath and conatins operators but not all documents to be stored are XML (many will be plain text). I'd like to keep the query document type agnostic and simply use something like conatins(data, {search text}) when text searching the documents.

Is this possible?

Thanks!
