Can anyone tell me how and/or why I'm getting stuck here? I have scouted around on the web for examples of 2NF and 3NF decompositions and they all seem to make more sense than the one I'm working on. Would appreciate any help - most of the explanations here seem clearer than my textbook.

I have R= (A,B,C,D,E,F) and F= (AB -> C, BC-> AD, D-> E, C-> A, CF->B)

I have that CF is the candidate key, and I know that in 2NF, the attributes are supposed to all be functionally dependent on that key, but I don't know what to do with these dependencies that don't contain part of the key.

Are my 2NF relations anywhere close to:

R1: ABCDE R2: AC R3: BCF ?

You have another candidate key: ABF –  ypercube Dec 1 '13 at 7:32
