How do I tell the current setting on a running mysqld server for server options that are set in an option file, if those options are not also a system variable?

System variables are easy because they show up in show variables, so for example if I want to know the server_id for a running mysqld server I can just run this query:

show variables like 'server_id'

But what if I want to know the status of a server option that is not also a system variable? For example I want to know if skip-slave-start is set on a running mysqld server. If it was set on the command line then I can run ps and see if the option is present, but if it's in an option file I have no way of telling if it's enabled, because it won't show up in show variables.

Can anyone tell me how to check this on a running database?
