  1. I want to use MySQL for my Java application as a database engine.
  2. I have two different applications that must be run on two separate computer networks.
  3. The first program saves the data in the database. And some users on the first network need to change or use the data. So I can't use an embedded solution like Derby embedded.
  4. The database should be updated on the second network weekly so the second application on the second network will be able to use data.

This should be done by a non-expert user so I want to develop an application which runs this backup-update. Should I copy the db directory as it has been explained here or there can be a better solution which will remain compatible also with the future versions of MySQL?
