Yes I had a look into that in your blog spaghettidba.com/2011/10/13/… but was a bit difficult to understand not your fault but mine( I am bit weak in pivot and unpivot). My next task is to understand how you did that using pivot and unpivot :)

same here parsing the xml is too costly. What i did is I put the expensive query in a cte and did the the same you did

Agree with the optimizer will generate a general plan , but why this much cost? And I did liked that analogy. Oops I came to conclusion with out proper understanding , need to go back and try hard.

@dtaylor, I think it's a maintenance plan , you can also check the log under management->maintenance plan -> your maintenance plan and right click on it and click historyyou will get some lead from there.
