How can I make my database more concise? I have considered moving Barcode to publication. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense to be in there. A Barcode is not guaranteed to be unique. Someone could have multiple instances of an asset. Where would we be if (s/h/it) wanted to keep track of each? Then again, I could have a field in the Asset table for quantity. Thanks again. |

How can I make my database more concise? Thank you for the lengthy and complete answer. I acutally had just done most of that right before your answer posted. After the comments and consulting the hierarchical wiki again, it seemed like the best and most logical idea. I, however, did not think of adding the asset_type. That also makes an abundant amount of sense. |

How can I make my database more concise? @JonSeigel I just read the wiki on Hierarchical Databases. Is my design not following that idea? |

How can I make my database more concise? @JNK Yes? Forgive my ignorance, but I'm not sure on the terminology for databases. To me Asset, Barcode and Publication would be property object to a parent object (book, music etc...) If you are asking why they are separated as they are, that is for situations just like Vehicle. I separated them for extensibility of the database. I won't know what asset type needs which tables until I get to that asset type. For instance, suppose someone wanted a furniture table. Furniture isn't a publication or a barcode. |

How can I make my database more concise? @JNK, Ok. So this much fragmentation is a good thing. What would be an extraordinary situation? |
