Creating indexes with t-sql scrips vs rebuild indexes in maintenance plan From my experience, depending on the scope of the operations being done in the script and the size of the data sets, it may be beneficial to generate one set of indexes for the insert/update process and then drop those and generate another set of indexes for use in querying. I would suggest playing around with different configurations and study the query plans generated in each setup until you find one that maximizes efficiency. |

Is there a way to get instance_id from msdb.dbo.sysjobhistory during the execution of a SQL Job step? @Marian Thanks, I'm not sure what happened to the rest of it when I submitted it. As for tokens, I can't see how that would be possible to do during the execution of the SSIS package since the instance_id record does not exist in the table. Whether it exists somewhere else at that point as a token, I do not know. |

Is there a way to get instance_id from msdb.dbo.sysjobhistory during the execution of a SQL Job step? I was planning to create my own table, I want to create a one-to-many relationship between sysjobhistory and my table (let's call it TaskLog) with instance_id. The problem is that instance_id is generated after the step is complete. |

Requesting advice on creating a table controlled SQL job scheduler @AaronBertrand There are new alerts being added on a fairly regular basis and, since there is no real control structure, the entire company is being inundated with alerts every time they run. The ultimate goal is to make it so that each alert only goes out to certain people and the recepients can be easily adjusted in a table. I assumed that an uber-job would be the best route to take in order to accomplish this. |

DTS error when a parameter is added to an Execute SQL Task Well, that's for SSIS, my question was about DTS. I ended up going the long way around and assigned the Execute SQL Task statement equal to a global string variable, which I created and assigned in a VB task. Not exactly the most elegant solution, but it got the job done. I really appreciate your help, though, @EricHiggins. |

DTS error when a parameter is added to an Execute SQL Task I'm assuming that a correctly parsed statement allows you to specify the variables to be used as parameters. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't question marks identify parameters in DTS? |
