comment Where can I find a syntax reference for Oracle SQL Developer's “Generate DB Doc” function?
Thanks @thatjeffsmith, but you're just reinforcing my point, that there isn't any formal documentation for this feature. In any case, I've since moved jobs and I no longer work with Oracle software, but thanks for taking the time to reply.

Thanks @mdoyle - great answer. I recently had to design a table for storing XML schemas, and I keyed it by namespace. Clearly, if that table gets big then the size PK index could become an issue, but at the moment there are five entries and I couldn't justify adding a surrogate key, as you call it. I guess XML namespace is an example of a "natural" key, but my trivial "widget" example doesn't have a natural key.

I had to qualify the select * as select hier.*, but other than that your query is great - thanks again!

Thanks - you're absolutely correct. I didn't have "the_level" in the cte query so it was failing otherwise.

revised How can I select rows from a hierarchical query with the lowest level?
Thanks for that! I got a connect by error because of the "level" in the final query. In the past I've found that giving "level" an alias solves this, as per my amendment - does that make sense?
