comment How large will the Transaction Log backup be?
@TomTom - Unfortunately that's not the case. Paul Randal wrote a comprehensive blog post about this - sqlskills.com/blogs/paul/…

TomTom's suggestion of 8GB would be good if you weren't experiencing what appears to be problems with slow disk when allocation 5GB. So maybe try with 2GB? The other option as mentioned is to create your database with a 50GB transaction log. Then you'll only have to wait while it's created then, rather than while executing your query.

comment Copy a SQL Server database from one server to another on demand
How large is the database? If it's particularly big then backup/restore will be the most efficient way to do this.

How big are the data and log files? And what are the autogrowth settings?

comment How to set SQL Server index pages per fragment?
What are you using for a clustered key for the table? Is it a monotonically increasing value (like an INDENTITY) or is it random (eg; GUID or character string). If it's the latter you may be getting page splits due to data having to be inserted to an existing page.

comment sql server 2008 execution plan different on two production servers
Are the statistics on both servers the same and up to date? I if one of them has stale stats for a table/index that will throw a plan off.
