A side question, why do you use materialized views if you refresh it on every insert? Isn't a separate table that you manually update with your triggers enough? You will need update and delete triggers, but if you've already gone down the trigger way..

Total runtime: 0.119 ms .. seems quite fast to me already. Sounds like your connection idea might be the right track to follow first.

If you want an easy system to work with, I would look at wal-e for shipping WAL logs to S3. Works great and is fairly easy to set up. Remember to rest a restore!
