comment Why is it not possible to alter a view with a “CREATE OR REPLACE”?
It's a good thing that PostgreSQL's DDL commands are transactional!

comment How to keep an unique counter per row with PostgreSQL?
Hm, why can't you use this technique then? This is the only method (other than pessimistic locking) that will give you a gap-less sequence.

A sequence is a bad counter if you want the next value to be previous + 1 as they don't run within the transaction.

Your locking strategy looks OK if you want pessimistic locking, but I would use pg_advisory_xact_lock so all the locks are automatically released on COMMIT/ROLLBACK.

I don't understand what you mean with "for a given operation" and where "key2" came from.

comment Postgresql table with one integer column, sorted index, with duplicate primary key
A useful middle approach to handle the locking issues is to use an external MQ as an optimization where you send messages with IDs that you can use in the database so do mainly lookups by primary key.

The problem with 'real' MQ systems is transactions. Either you say good bye to transactional processing of messages, implement support for duplicate messages or you get a massive increase of technical complexity to get around something that the db could have solved.
