comment Why are zero length spaces being returned from a Union All against an empty table in SQL Server 2005 but not SQL Server 2012
what's really weird is that even your query results say len(unit6) is 0, but something is still inside the spanner

idk either, I haven't found a setting yet that gives me the results you're seeing.

Actually it doesn't matter when the column is NOT NULL anyway, it should always be padded to the length of the column.

comment Randomizing table contents and storing them back in the table
actually it will be the order of whatever index is clustered, but that is usually the primary key

comment How to create a conditional index on MySQL?
I would disagree on the memory also, it is pretty cheap these days as well (certainly not as cheap as disk space, but at $10/gig for some of it, I'd say you can splurge a bit :)

comment How to create a conditional index on MySQL?
No, it is not, but that was not a requirement in the question, and it wasn't stated that the table was heavily weighted to one of the values. For that I would create a materialized view of the STATUS you're looking for, but MySQL doesn't support those.

comment What are the main causes of deadlocks and can they be prevented?
It's common courtesy to provide comments when downvoting... This is a valid answer, a select statement upgrading to a table lock and taking forever can surely cause a deadlock.
