Developing, modeling, administering, tuning, troubleshooting, extracting, transforming, and loading databases full time since 1996.

First professional assignment with databases began building CAClipper xBase applications back when a database with 2 million plus records was considered huge. Moved to FoxPro and Borland Visual Delphi in the mid 90's and then SQL Server in '98.

Have also worked with Sybase, MySQL, Oracle, Access, Multivalue Informix, Filemaker, 4D and the Microsoft BI stack.

comment In Microsoft SQL Server's linked server configuration, what does the “RPC” setting do?
I'm just guessing here but from what you posted... if A is linked to B from A, and B is linked to A from B then the links are going both ways through two different pipes. The settings above likely only apply when A is linked to B on A ONLY.

Agreed - they can't very well expect you to meet expectations without publishing what those expectations are. Is it related to HIPPA, Sarbanes Oxley, specific legal requirements related to the storage of criminal histories etc...

I like any solution that makes two jobs into one.

comment Should SQL full text search match the value test2 when searching for test?
I wrote an application once where I wanted to support all the features of FTS. I ended up having to outline in the user manual that users would need to pass quotes, wildcards, and specific syntax themselves in order to do fuzzy searches. Some power users of the application were able to figure it out but most users never took advantage and then also complained that the index wasn't very good. Google has made search expectations pretty lofty for most lay-users.

comment How to effectively query and aggregate a normalized SQL db?
Wish I could say I figured it out myself but alas... I found an article awhile back on alternatives to cursors. This was one of the tricks described. I think it was a SqlServerCentral article.

comment SQL Server: index creation date
I originally posted sys.objects but then I thought about it more and realized that wouldn't work. Indexes aren't in there only constraints created by indexes. Found this link that might help explain.

More performant for sure, and probably how I would do it as well, but doesn't meet request to "denormalize".

comment Using integrated security over VPN
Yes, I switched to sql authentication after network guy helped me understand how the server sees the incoming VPN user and realized it wasn't going to work they way I wanted it to.
