Developing, modeling, administering, tuning, troubleshooting, extracting, transforming, and loading databases full time since 1996.

First professional assignment with databases began building CAClipper xBase applications back when a database with 2 million plus records was considered huge. Moved to FoxPro and Borland Visual Delphi in the mid 90's and then SQL Server in '98.

Have also worked with Sybase, MySQL, Oracle, Access, Multivalue Informix, Filemaker, 4D and the Microsoft BI stack.

comment What are the best practices for ETL of data from one OLTP system to another, Part 2?
If there is no index that allows it to jump right to the value. A table scan occurs when it has to search row by row for the values. If the ETL process rely's on a subquery that causes a table scan then an index would help. But if you're just doing raw inserts then no effect.

Yes, I'm still getting used to the stack exchange format.

So, the word I'm getting from network folks is that because of the way that cisco works this is probably not going to work. SQL authentication it is.

comment create a FTS in sql2005 on multile fields in multiple tables?
To use a calculated field that needs data from another source you'd have to build it into a function. You'd then reference the function in the calculated field. Once you did that I'm not sure the field would be available for full text indexing. I've frankly never tried it. Even if it did work I think building an indexed view would be cleaner and more performant. Above you say, "sort of like a join" - an indexed view actually is a join. Behind the scenes sql builds a little table from the join that it can index and search.

Just got a chance to actually try this code at home and realized I needed to debug a little.
