Developing, modeling, administering, tuning, troubleshooting, extracting, transforming, and loading databases full time since 1996.

First professional assignment with databases began building CAClipper xBase applications back when a database with 2 million plus records was considered huge. Moved to FoxPro and Borland Visual Delphi in the mid 90's and then SQL Server in '98.

Have also worked with Sybase, MySQL, Oracle, Access, Multivalue Informix, Filemaker, 4D and the Microsoft BI stack.

I like any solution that makes two jobs into one.

comment Should SQL full text search match the value test2 when searching for test?
I wrote an application once where I wanted to support all the features of FTS. I ended up having to outline in the user manual that users would need to pass quotes, wildcards, and specific syntax themselves in order to do fuzzy searches. Some power users of the application were able to figure it out but most users never took advantage and then also complained that the index wasn't very good. Google has made search expectations pretty lofty for most lay-users.

I think a few of us are really hoping this site becomes the home for dba's as opposed to stackoverflow. Obviously plenty of folks on this site willing to answer... we just need more questions!!

comment How to effectively query and aggregate a normalized SQL db?
Wish I could say I figured it out myself but alas... I found an article awhile back on alternatives to cursors. This was one of the tricks described. I think it was a SqlServerCentral article.

comment SQL Server: index creation date
I originally posted sys.objects but then I thought about it more and realized that wouldn't work. Indexes aren't in there only constraints created by indexes. Found this link that might help explain.

More performant for sure, and probably how I would do it as well, but doesn't meet request to "denormalize".

comment Using integrated security over VPN
Yes, I switched to sql authentication after network guy helped me understand how the server sees the incoming VPN user and realized it wasn't going to work they way I wanted it to.

comment When should extended events be used instead of SQL Profiler/perfmon?
I'm no expert on Xevents, but from what I have seen they are better at asking specific questions of things that are or just happened. I still heavily use perfmon for regular monitoring and general server health as well as establishing baselines. I also use it for extended data collection that I can analyze later. I'm definatley marking this as a fav question though because I'd love to learn more about the potential of Xevents.

Are you still able to attach it on the original server and create a backup file?

comment What are the best practices for ETL of data from one OLTP system to another, Part 2?
If there is no index that allows it to jump right to the value. A table scan occurs when it has to search row by row for the values. If the ETL process rely's on a subquery that causes a table scan then an index would help. But if you're just doing raw inserts then no effect.
