@ChrisTravers thanks for the kind words and to all apologies for the bucolic nature of my comments. I have been in sparse table land before in oracle, ok as long as there are not sparse indexes, and also in EAV land in SQL Server which can result in huge SQL Queries for quite trivial operations which is why I recommend appropriate tools rather than getting a relational database to do what it was never really meant for.
