comment How can one improve the performance of a query that selects on a low cardinality column in MySQL?
It does not make much sense defining an index to a VERY low cardinality column as in your example - just three possible values. Indexes serve to narrow queriable data. But, I bet your queries rely on other columns, don't they? Can you enrich your problem, with the actual schema and query samples?

comment How to translate high level entity relationship into schema
Hm... my bad. Actually I'd better issue 'Authentication', not 'Authenticating'. Rounded rectangles here have no information value. They came rounded just because. I will review my post as soon as I get home.

comment Probable circular dependency, but query still runs
One more thing. My models always consider end_date = 2100/jan/01 as from now on. This provide simpler, more straightforward, queries: ... WHERE TODAY BETWEEN start_date AND end_date. The natural way of setting end_date = NULL leads to ... WHERE start_date <= TODAY AND (end_date >= TODAY OR end_date IS NULL). Of course, for input controls at the user interfaces, the code has to interpret 2100/jan/01 as blank, and vice-versa.

Could you provide us a snapshot displaying part of the model as shown at the SSAS' Naive Bayes viewer?
