What must I already know to get profound knowledge in Oracle As of this past December, Oracle certification (associate dba/dba) required attending the first and second Oracle admin classes (around $3500 each). I recently have had to take on oracle (we purchased an app that only runs on it) and have had more issues to date with the utilities assoicated with it. I read the oracle docs and then subscribe to safari.com for a different perspective. |

Restoring Oracle prod backup to test server with new database name No RMAN is involved so far. This is a manual process for the data, control, etc. |

Why can the SA account no longer access the master database? Anyone have a read on where the connection string is stored? If the connection is made by hitting a webserver, it might be stored there. If there is a separate application server, perhaps there. I've even seen vendors store their connection information in the registry of the database server (with the password in clear text!) |

Why can the SA account no longer access the master database? Maybe watching the app connect while running Profiler will get you closer to where you want to be. |

Why can the SA account no longer access the master database? Presumably this application requires connection string information that is used to make a database connection. Based upon what I am reading I'm not seeing how the same connection string is being used for all of the database connections the application makes. |

Why can the SA account no longer access the master database? What are the specific sa account permissions you are seeing? "Error state 16" - what error code are you seeing? |

Is there any benefit to having one sql server login for multiple users? I have seen a lot of this in my experience and I do not recommend it. Consider sp_who2 output with numerous 'generic-sql-login' connections appearing. What happens if there is an issue and a need to id a specific developer? Generic logins are of no use. |

Recommendations on creating user-objects on system database I've seen it both ways. I think user objects in master are prone to be forgotten, whereas a DBA database that contains those objects you use to enable you to do your job is more self-documenting. |

What is the signifigance of a fillfactor of 20? I'm willing to bet someone was confused and was wanting to specify 80% full. |

Linked servers login failure: Impersonate works, Username/password fails Double-checking, I see that when setting mapping a login in a linked server and deliberately using an incorrect password, I get an immediate error (Login failed) when clicking OK. I'm stumped. I could see a login password being changed on a remote server AFTER the linked server mapping is set up, but you've logged into SQL Server remotely using your mapping login. Arrrgh. |

Linked servers login failure: Impersonate works, Username/password fails Clearly your instance is accepting remote connections. If the remote login is set up with in SQL Server on the remote server you should be able to get there. I have found that when I have set up a login to map remotely I have mis-typed the password. What is the error that you are getting? |
