comment Postgresql streaming replication and wal archive?
The key question is still how to handle the wal files on a failover. Where does the new master write them such that we can restore from a backup made before the failover, including wal files from the old and new master?

comment Postgresql streaming replication and wal archive?
We are obviously not using archive_cleanup_command, because we want to archive WAL files so we can restore from backup. If we archive to separate folders, how do we get restore from a basebackup to work? The target system needs a restore_command. Which folder does it point at?

Differences: we're using 9.1. We aren't archiving wal files to the slave, we're archiving them to a shared folder on the network. Everything you've covered, we have working. The question is about failover and restoring from a basebackup + WAL archives.

@dezso True, but they will be reluctant to remove documented functionality. Given the quality of the documentation in general, I still assume the omission of this behavior is intentional.

I have tested this, and in at least my test scenario, the index file size was reduced. But this is only one scenario, and there could be many variables that affect the behavior (number of indexes, total size on disk, etc) so I can't trust a simple test.

My suspicion at this point is that the devs don't want to officially document this behavior because they don't want to permanently be tied to this implementation.

Do you have any reference that CLUSTER replaces indexes?
