comment Why Django session table grows on PostgreSQL
"idle in transaction" results in a VACUUM that can't clean up records that might me used in these transactions. What is causing these idle transactions?

comment Postgres Write Performance on Intel S3700 SSD
Test a 64-core machine with at least 64 concurrent clients (behind a connection pool ) to get descent results. A Postgres proces can only run on one core.

Did you tell your management that version 8.3 is not supported anymore?

comment Performance of database with transactional data
Check your configuration and your queries, PostgreSQL can do thousands of transactions per second. And still run autovacuum. MySQL is so much worse, I'm glad we got rid of it! (not a rant, just a fact in our situation)

comment SOLVED: Postgres 8.4.5: Bad query plan vs Good query plan when changing date range on large data table
Several bugs in the queryplanner were fixed, that's why it's so important to get the patches in. It takes just a few seconds/minutes downtime.

comment SOLVED: Postgres 8.4.5: Bad query plan vs Good query plan when changing date range on large data table
Latest patch is version 8.4.16, you're missing 9 patch-rounds. Please update first and try your queries again.

comment Worth investing in MS SQL?
If you need more horse power or functionality, check PostgreSQL. It's open source (BSD style license), works great with PHP and comparable with SQL Server functionality. Don't forget to use a connection pool like pgBouncer or pgPool (open source as well)

comment Postgres scalability - What is the impact of connection pooling?
Not sure about pgpool, but pgbouncer doesn't brake prepared statements nor prepared transactions when you have the configuration right. Check the manual and ask questions if something doesn't work as expected.
