comment Some MySQL slave errors?
skip slave counter is not something to take lightly. It is ONLY OK to use it when familiar with the context of the statement that failed replication and accepting that skipping it is an acceptable data drift on the slave. But as a general answer this is a way to break integrity of the slave as a true replica of the master

@a_horse_with_no_name: also...when the optimizer tries to see if it can do a sort in memory or needs to write the rows at disk, it decides that, in part, based on the 'advertised' size of the varchar. So if your column is defined as 1000 characters but on average has 30, you are setting the database up for too many on disk operations than probably needed. You also don't wanna go too low and have to extend later so it is a tough line to walk. But definitely try to avoid being too generous :)

start scripting? use your favorite scripting language (bash, python, perl) and use the xtrabackup docs to call and capture err and output streams.

yes xtrabackup manager is in beta so use it at your own risk. In our shop we went for writing a cron based manager script internally for better or worse.

i insteall percona xtrabackup on all my machines. You need it to prepare a snapshot made by xtrabackup anyway. I usually do a daily full snapshot with Xtrabackup and an hourly incremental snapshot. You could look into code.google.com/p/xtrabackup-manager for how to automate this

comment What is the most effective way to cluster MySQL for my requirements?
Bonus points if you also add 'leaf' slaves for OLAP queries and as dedicated backup slaves but this is where money starts becoming the sticking point :)

Agree on that, plus only use ONE of the masters for actual writes and use a floating IP controlled by Pacemaker (or some such tool) to move the IP if one master fails.

comment mysql replication deadlock slave stopped
If you already set the transaction commit to 2 then set it to 1. That is the most conservative setting. I'd be surprised if this still happens with a transaction flushed to log before finishing then. Crazy question….are these tables InnoDB? (stupid to ask this now but one never knows)

One way to avoid this from happening is to make sure innodb_flush_log_at_trx_commit is NOT 0. 0 means it writes transactions to the log every second regardless of whether the transaction finished which could cause this state.
