comment Non-unique multicolumn foreign key
Or just add the line unique (id, topic_id), in your "create table"-command for comments.

comment Non-unique multicolumn foreign key
Try create unique index how_you_want_to_name_this_index on comments (id, topic_id); before issuing the alter table command adding the foreign key.

If you don't know much about it, I can strongly recommend to read the book "Beginning Database Design" by Clare Churcher.

comment BLOBs or references in PostgreSQL
Yes, I deleted it, as the performance problems with bytea I wrote about can be avoided. The comments can be summarized by "Everything is fine with bytea, you should just make sure that you don't escape non-printable characters in the database and then un-escape them again in your application. As araqnid commented, you should instead use hex escaping that is supported by libpq."

comment Where can I find good literature for beginners?
@Nebbs: Sorry about your lecturer. You should definitely edit your question to include some topics mentioned in the syllabus of the course to get some useful answers here.

Sorry, I can't find the button to convert a question to community wiki either. I think it used to be below the text box for the question, but it isn't any more.

As your question doesn't have a definite answer, you should convert it to community wiki.

comment How can I configure PostgreSQL 9.0 to start automatically under Windows XP, Part II?
Thanks for the answer. I had set the server to automatically restart once if it fails, but this doesn't help. I guess I'll ask the guys at sf eventually.

With PostgreSQl it is possible to set up a rule that automatically deletes the file in the filesystem when the record containing the reference is deleted.

comment How can I configure PostgreSQL 9.0 to start automatically under Windows XP, Part II?
@jcolebrand: The problem is that the service "postgres" is set to automatic, but doesn't start automatically after the 2nd reboot (after the first it does). Logged in as administrator one can start the service only after reinserting the password, which seems to be forgotten by Windows. Where the problem comes from, I have no clue.

@BenV: Somehow my password gets lost after every 2nd reboot (I switch off my development PC every night), so that I have to reinsert the correct password as admin again and again. Do you happen to have a clue what's going on? (Thanks in advance)
