Just tested on a newly created database. The table "sysdiagrams" also appears in that collection (is_ms_shipped is "0"). So this seems to not work for me.

Are you sure that Microsoft Access has the sys.tables and sys.columns? When I try your suggestion, Access complains about missing database "sys.mdb".

Thank you, @Nick. I carefully searched Google and dba.se.com before posting my question. In my opinion, this is rather unrelated. I do not want to know whether an index is required but rather how to determine when too many indexes make UPDATE and INSERT statements too slow.
