Oh yea, I am an avid user of SQL Sentry Plan Explorer.

comment Every query plan statistic says my query should be faster, but it is not
I need to report back the total number of rows returned across all pages, what is the correct way to do that then?

I am still kind of new to this, but won't a index that big put more pressure on the cache causing cache misses more often?

Hrmmm, I got the tuning advisor to come to the same conclusion. With all of those included columns the index's estimated size will be 4GB, and this is on our striped down dev database with only a subset of the live data on it.

comment Rollback the sql server data
Do you have backups of the database and what is the recovery model set to for the database (select recovery_model_desc from sys.databases where name = 'YourDatabaseName')

I guess what I want is not possible, oh well. I opened a feature request on connect to get it added.

Rolling back is not a issue, the goal I was after was instead of having 50 2GB databases I would have 1 2GB database and 50 200MB differential databases. From what I read about snapshots I don't think that will do what I want.

@AaronBertrand I get just the plan information, I get no results when I have any of the SHOWPLAN items set to ON.

@AaronBertrand It only shows up using the toolbar button, and it shows up every time consistently. The only difference is using the toolbar button or the set commands. Doing DBCC DROPCLEANBUFFERS before each run did not change the behaviors. One thing I just did notice, clicking "Show Estimated Execution Plan" looks identical to the SHOWPLAN_XML plan, also when SHOWPLAN is on I don't get result sets when I click Execute. Is SHOWPLAN more equivalent to clicking the "estimated" button instead of clicking the "actual" button and running the query?

Both management studio and analysis tools are both 11.0.3128.0 which matches my version number of SQL server exactly, I have included all of the version numbers from my About... window in to the question.

comment A clarification of MERGE best practices
Do you have any postings on the way to do a "proper" UPSERT with discrete statements instead of using MERGE? I am still relatively new to professional level sql development.
