comment How mature is the Firebird database when compared with PostgreSQL and MySQL?
I beg to differ. Developing, at least partially, on a different DBMS keeps your code portable and stops you from using some non standardized/shared features.

comment Postgres synchronized backup - what's with the archive?
Thanks, yeah the second part of the question (see edit) concerning how a new backup catches up is still unanswered.

comment Understanding block sizes
only one more question: What exactly do you mean when talking about aligning? Is that being a multiple of the smaller block size? E.g. 32k is aligned to 8k? Or are there other factors involved?

comment Find out if two rows came from same transaction in Oracle
Just a clarify, a different ORA_ROWSCN on two rows tells me that the two rows where not last changed in the same transaction?

comment WAL Database log on separate disk good idea RAID10?
Okay I researched a little. Splitting of disks from the array to use as a separate log pulls down the general performance on the data (less disks). I thing a good approach is to have the log on a extra partition as long as the RAID-Controller can handle fsync for a partition separatly and doesn't flush all the dirty stuff out of the cache.
