comment Why is MySQL order by performance poor within a single partition of a partitioned table?
Unless you post query plans for all of the scenarios, we can't really help you. Edit your question

A few seconds for that volume of data is also OK. Not sure what you're expecting. People whinge on here about dealing with 1000 rows - you're dealing with plenty more than that

An ORDER BY involves a sort. of course it's slower. If the working set for the sort doesn't fit in memory it'll have to go to disk, which makes it even slower.

Another thing, do a "LIST INCARNATION OF DATABASE yourdb" to see if there's been a resetlogs.

A quick glance suggests you're stuffed, as there's only incremental backups and no full backups. One suggestion - copy the datafiles to another directory, then (I quote the documentation) "Record a datafile copy as a level 0 incremental backup in the RMAN repository, which enables you to use it as part of an incremental backup strategy.". Catalog the copies, then try the restore again. Have you checked what SCN the current datafiles are at?

comment How to “swap” out production tables
Why not just do an insert followed by a delete in the same transaction? Or is the MySQL isolation level too crap to cope with something like that?

comment Seeting up a PostgreSQL database on another hard drive than my system one on OS X?
Yeah, same. Thought a symbolic link was nice and transparent & needed no config changes.

What RDBMS are you using? Have you tried writing a query?
