comment How to clear an an Error 15404 after a DB restart (besides rebooting)
More info. Restarting SQL Server didn't resolve the issue, but rebooting the machine did. Possibly a log-off/on would have done it, as I suspect it's some subtle issue around my domain account. Note that I haven't changed my password recently.

I'll just add that I've just randomly got this error from a SQL script that was working yesterday. No changes to the script, exact same machine, no obvious errors in the windows logs. The offending line of SQL was a CREATE ASSEMBLY statement, AUTHORIZATION [dbo], PERMISSION_SET = EXTERNAL_ACCESS;

@ErrorSeverity == 16. I wonder this is too low to trigger termination?

There's a good reason for asking as the order-by clause in question is very complex and therefore copying creates both code maintenance ballast as well as increasing the probability of future defects. The other alternative is a minor refactoring which I thought I might be able to avoid if the SQL standard defined an implicit sort order. In any case I was just interested if there was formal documentation covering this point.

OK I'll add one further qualification - are the results guaranteed to be sorted if only one ROW_NUMBER() clause is specified.
