comment Default Backup to be Copy-Only
@PJMahoney - it is a full SQL database level backup run from the payroll application. My Friday brain hadn't thought about the SQL injection possibilities, but it's obvious now. Being a 3rd party application it's hard coded in and we can't change the code. We'll go with the approach of getting the user to run a backup outside of the payroll application

Thanks, not quite the problem. I've added a bit more to the question to try and make what we are trying to achieve a bit clearer.

comment fill table A with random ID's from another table B
Could you just order by newid() instead of doing a row_number over it? (Never mind, I re-read the question)

comment Log file shrink attempts are futile
I understand why you'd want the log to be less than 52GB on an 8GB database, but 256 MB seems small enough. Is there any requirement to make it smaller?

comment Scaling out SQL Server and syncing data across multiple machines
Do you really need to shard your database? How big are you expecting your database to be? Scaling our reads is relatively simple (e.g. using Availability Groups), writes is much much harder. Give how much you can scale on Azure and AWS type infrastructure, why not scale up instead of out?

comment SQL Server File Latency
Where are the files? Are they on physical drives in the server, or part of a SAN?
