Yes, I understand that. But I'm using table variables for the indexing -- indexed views, with better read for the performance hit of populating the index. I looked at using a CTE for the operation, but a CTE is just syntactic sugar. The amount of time the operation takes is important -- it's timing out in the app.

@RemusRusanu: The ultimate operation is an update. The query options I posted were for populating table variables to get the details for the update (adjacency model).

Doesn't have to be 2008/R2 -- 2005 is supported on 2012.

@DForck42: Updated, currently we've dumped the INSTEAD OF triggers & moved the logic back into the sprocs with a check for an active TRANSACTION.

comment After upgrade of SQL Server 2000 database to SQL Server 2008 the view is not sorted on the group by column
+1: Agreed. Because the view encapsulates the logic, someone could specify an additional ORDER BY on the use of the view in queries -- the original ORDER BY becomes a waste of resources.

comment Keep transaction log size under control during batch processing
@mrdenny: Coworkers are encountering a similar problem with the log -- any particular Profiler settings you'd recommend to diagnose this?
