Another geek still trying to decipher the meaning of “42”.

It seems that amount his main interest are:

  • online communities of practice and the way they evolve in time
  • product design, simplicity in design and accessibility
  • productivity and the way the IT solutions are impacting it

comment Does it make sense to upgrade to a newer PostgreSQL JDBC driver?
you do not mention anything about performance or stability. i am not interested about features, as clearly the application is not going to use them as it was not designed to benefit from them. also i have serious doubts that the app will need access to metadata.

comment Is it possible to quickly create/restore database snapshots with PostgreSQL?
Update: this will not work in production because the source database will have connections to it. We need another solution.

comment tuning postgresql for large amounts of ram
Last update of pgtune was in 2009, that's 5 years ago and still counting. I am wondering if its still valid for 9.1-9.2-9.3 series.

comment How to properly monitor the number of PostgreSQL database connections?
@CraigRinger maybe I could configure Postgres or the clients to keep connections open for a longer period of time, so I could measure them. Due to the current setup I had one case when the postgres started to refuse connections. Monitoring was not able to detect this because this happened inside the 5 minute interval, and it went from below warning level to above critical in less then 5 minutes. And this was not a DoS attack.

This is a great solution, 5x faster than drop-restore but is has one downside: you need to drop current connections before doing this otherwise it will fail to run.

comment Postgresql out of memory while trying to a request of ~500mb
The query returned ~10 records with lenghts between 76MB and 150MB. So I guess that may be cause by the poor implementation of openfire and that more memory to the server may solve the problem. The question is how much should I add? It's a VM so it should be easy to add more. Any other changes to make? Thanks

Maybe this additional info could help us debugging, initially I just tried to restart postgres but this failed, complaining about shmmax being too low. I raise this on the kernel to double its initial value (from 1GB to 2GB) and postgres started after. Still, the sam error occurs, in the same contex. Thanks god that the app generating this is under my control and that it wasn't a critial one, so for the moment I stopped this app (OpenFire), still I would like to find out the root cause and fix it.

@DanielVérité I am not so sure how that shared memory works, but I do not see how it could be possible to get out of memory while the OS still reports 0.8GB of memory FREE, free as in not-used at all. If I am not mistaken, cached is part of used, and is that part that can easily be freed if needed.
