comment Discriminating rows where column start and/or end with dots
@mustaccio Yes I know that but if I am asking is because I don't know how to use it on this edge case, so it's better to down vote my question without answer than provide a solution?

comment What's the best way to diagram this “relation” looking for performance and|or disk space savings
Great answer, I will go with first one, less JOIN when I need to get that column and BTW will not be queried all the time only when a record belongs to a category based on the previous relationship. thanks and happy new year

comment Datatype for phone number: VARCHAR, INT or BIGINT?
Great, can you improve a little your question by adding some queries? I mean I got the concept but I am not sure how to create the virtual or generated values. I am thinking in use CONCAT or something else but not sure at all. Also you mention a search by CAPS using LIKE could you put an example of this too? What about the performance of columns calculated on the fly (virtual) vs persisted (generated`)?

I would keep the human-recognizability only if I show you those numbers later and that will not happen, at least for a common public, I will show them to system administrator that doesn't care about this. Anyway that's good for anyone to remember but when you dial up you ended up with numbers based on letters. Now, having this clear if you use INT or BIGINT what qty will you set them?

Yes, they will be critical so I wont make any mistake in the future, based on that I would only allow numbers, what is your suggestion? Is easy to add a new column that hold the extension number or I want to make people enter numbers as 1-800-DBA-HELP by it's digits
