After working for a hospital for several years (thank you MUSC!), I've decided to strike out on my own. Now the owner of a small software consulting firm specializing in .NET Desktop development and iOS apps.

Custom SQL Server Computer Build Fair enough. Basically, we're building a database using legacy data and are going to begin building our trading algorithms by running analysis on that data. What we're looking for in the short-term is a decent machine so that the testing can be done as quickly as (reasonably) possible. Since we're considering spending a couple thousand dollars, I figured it might be worth it to buy the right mix of components to optimize even the initial/test machine. I have, so far, determined that my iMac running a Win7 VM is insufficient for anything beyond the initial data load (no big surprise there!). |

Custom SQL Server Computer Build @ChrisS I'm not sure how I've indicated that I'm not willing to "put an ounce into helping [myself]". I clearly put a lot of thought into my original post. My basic question boils down to how to optimize SQL Server performance given a fairly small amount of incoming data and a fairly large amount of ongoing data analysis. And your original answer was very condescending and arrogant, assuming that I don't know how to do my job! You have yet to offer anything remotely approaching assistance, except to recommend buying a server rather than assembling one. That's NOT technicalities and semantics!! |

Custom SQL Server Computer Build @ChrisS Again, you missed it! I don't hope to earn my pay by setting up the database server. I hope to earn my pay by writing software. The database server is secondary to that, though required. If it (the software) actually works, we'll pay someone who's a true expert in the field to build/recommend a production database server. Also, we need a system that can at least approximate a production system in order to write the software. Please don't comment any further as you apparently aren't willing to help. Thanks! |

Custom SQL Server Computer Build I guess you didn't read my post well enough, since I clearly state that it ISN'T MY JOB. We're starting a small hobby/side business, and I'm the ONLY one with tech experience. If it actually works, we'd of course go with a true expert, but we're not going to pay that kind of money up front until we've built a working prototype system. That's what this build is intended to do: give us a powerful enough system to do testing. It's not the final production system. |

Custom SQL Server Computer Build @gbn Your links seem to indicate that perhaps RAID 1 is the way to go for all of the volumes. Is that a correct interpretation? Since we don't actually need storage space as much as I/O speed, would 4 RAID 1 arrays be recommended? Also, how do you feel about SSD reliability for DB storage? |

Custom SQL Server Computer Build @Shark So, how would you recommend altering the drive setup? Can you give me an ideal solution as well as a budget solution? |
