Can MySQL reasonably perform queries on billions of rows?
You emphasize the huge difference in hard drive vs memory latency but your numbers are off by a factor of 1000. If hard drives have a latency of around 10ms, and memory 10ns, the latencies do not differ by a factor of 1,000 but a factor of 1,000,000!
