2015 Moderator Election

On Stack Exchange, we believe the core moderators should come from the community, and be elected by the community itself through popular vote. We hold regular elections to determine who these community moderators will be.

Community moderators are accorded the highest level of privilege on our community, and should themselves be exemplars of positive behavior and leaders within the community.

Our general criteria for moderators is as follows:

  • patient and fair
  • leads by example
  • shows respect for their fellow community members in their actions and words
  • open to some light but firm moderation to keep the community on track and resolve (hopefully) uncommon disputes and exceptions

Every election has three phases:

  1. Nomination
  2. Primary
  3. Election

Please participate in the moderator elections by voting, and perhaps even by nominating yourself to be a community moderator!

Hello, my name is Paul and I would like to join the moderator team on Database Administrators.

I care about this site, and want to help keep the quality of Q & A high as we continue to grow. At the same time, we should always remember there is a real person behind every question, comment, and answer. I believe we need to retain our special "small site feel" and become even better at working with people to improve (salvageable) contributions, while still acting decisively when necessary.

I have been an active member for more than 4 years, with 1172 daily visits, 6242 votes, 937 helpful flags, and 718 edits. I already spend much of my time assisting the community moderation effort though voting, commenting, editing, flagging, and processing the review queues. I am the top reviewer of all time in the Close Votes, Late Answers, Reopen Votes, and Low Quality moderation queues, and second in First Posts and Suggested Edits. It is not all about the numbers though; I would like to think the quality of my contributions is pretty good overall too.

I live in New Zealand (UTC+12) so my time on site probably compliments the availability of other high-rep users and moderators pretty well.

  • As a dedicated user of this site I couldn't help but be really happy of you submitting for mod. Great job done until now, Paul! – Marian Jul 30 '15 at 7:11
  • You are the person that has made me want to learn more about New Zealand like no-one else before – because of the greatest respect for you that you've inspired, both as a professional and as a person. – Andriy M Jul 30 '15 at 9:22

I would like to nominate myself to be a moderator of this site. I have been a member of this site since 3+ years learning and sharing my knowledge thereby helping out people in the community.

Being a Moderator is like being a gardener that takes responsibility, cleans out bad weeds, get rid of bugs and helps flourish the garden (stackexchange site) with being trusted, gentle, approachable and determined, which is something that people take for granted when visiting this site. Its a joy for me to get rid of spams and at the end of day, I feel rewarded to see the site being cleaned of clutter and unwanted stuff thereby driving more people to visit this site.

I completely agree with @jcolebrand's comment and so I want to reference Martin Luther King Jr's words. I have the right attitude of helping and being helped and this is what matters a lot with the technology skills for a Moderator.

Also, it would be a good chance for me to learn skills from other Moderators as well whom I highly admire due to their community contributions.

  • It is great that we have so many good candidates! And a hard choice for the voters. – ypercubeᵀᴹ Jul 30 '15 at 17:27
  • ypercube totally agree .. we have good candidates and people on dba.se. I personally feel that @PaulWhite is a better choice as a Mod (not denying others are not .. just my honest opinion) - technically and non-technically. I truly respect people like him, Aaron, Remus and others since I have learned a lot from them. – Kin Shah Jul 30 '15 at 19:31

As a dedicated user of this site, I'd like to offer my nomination as a chance for me to give back to this incredible community of database professionals.

I am fair, honest, open, and easily approachable, and will endeavor to wield my moderator super powers with the utmost of care.

Having spent 1,000+ days on this site, I believe I am in a good position to help steer the ship in the right direction, hopefully away from the icebergs, and MySQL (just kidding about the icebergs).

I take the duties of moderation seriously, and only have the best interests of the database administrator community, including those using all types of databases, even Microsoft Access, in mind.

  • Thanks everyone, I appreciate the support! If anyone has questions regarding my candidacy, we can chat in chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/26309/… – Max Vernon Jul 28 '15 at 16:54
  • What's your opinion on taking out trash, washing dishes, doing windows, vacuuming, sweeping, mopping and washing down the blackboards? ;-) That's what the moderators do. Nothing glitzy or glamarous. – jcolebrand Jul 28 '15 at 23:35
  • Agreed, @jcolebrand - you've seen the all the tireless edits I've done over the past 3 years! – Max Vernon Jul 29 '15 at 0:23
  • @MaxVernon few comments were left in your support saying we support your candidature I cannot see those comments are they deleted ? – Shanky Jul 29 '15 at 5:12
  • Yes, @shanky those comments were cleaned up by SE. – Max Vernon Jul 29 '15 at 11:35

This election is complete.
