Thanks. I eventually ended up blowing away the contents of msmerge_tombstone - even once I'd got the row count down to a less massive number, it was clear that something had got REALLY wrong. Fortunately, there don't seem to have been any adverse effects after a few days - but the advice above seems sound. Hopefully it won't happen again!
