ST_Union(geom) is an aggregate (like sum() ) and must be applied to all rows. In the first run, geomRoute will receive a union of all geometries in the table and will represent a new geometry (a line). For now, think route_agg as a source of n rows of geometries in geom column. Then ST_Extent will give me the bounding box of this new line. The second route_agg will give me each line and search for points nearby. Because the points table planet_osm_point contains too much data, I must compute only points inside that box I created (routeBB && ST_Transform(pt.way,4326) ).
