This is what works for me. I have a psql script and I want to exit if a psql variable is not set, i.e., checking if :{?filename} is false => \quit . I can use \quit or \q to end the script without relying on ON_ERROR_STOP being specified. The only bit I need to be cautious about is the exit status of 0 in this case.
