Ok, that's great. We're on Ubuntu so I think the process is slightly different, e.g the mysql_upgrade is done by the repo package upgrade, which probably means I can't so easily disable the wsrep_desync and wsrep_on but I'll post back here when I've done it with how I got on. That might not be for a while though as it is not totally required yet and I'm scared!
