I recently upgraded my database to MySQL 8.0 and I'm using phpmyadmin to get status information. I also upgraded my virtual server to 4GB RAM and 2 vCPUs, intended to be a MySQL-only server for my websites. MySQL runs by itself on the server, I have php and everything else on a separate server.

Problems: The memory usage on my server seems to creep up over time. It usually runs fine, but will crash after a few days or so due to OOM killer. These can be ugly, sometimes MySQL won't restart for hours (locked up / frozen / etc), even if my cronjob script checks every 5 minutes to see if MySQL is running and to restart of it's not running. My websites sometimes end up being down all night/morning until I wake up, and I'll be forced to reboot the OS a few times before things start working again.

There are also issues with slowdowns on the websites that seem to happen without warning, without any apparent reason, nothing in the slow-query log, slow website traffic, with plenty of memory available. These happen for about an hour and the problem goes away on it's own. When it happens, it can take 20-30 seconds for a web page to load, because of an issue with MySQL.

I've investigated the slow-query logs and queries that run without using indexes. After investigating, it turns out many of these involve small tables with 200 rows for countries/states, where we select the most of the table and display it on the website, as designed (which is why many of them show up in the "queries that don't use indexes") list. Otherwise, there isn't much else in that part of the log aside from selecting lots of stuff from small tables.

UPDATE

I've decided to phase all MyISAM tables to Innodb in all of my databases. There are no more MyISAM tables anymore. Hopefully this can simplify the tuning job.

3 days ago, I phased out all MyISAM tables and made them InnoDB tables, added "skip-name-resolve" to my.cnf and restarted the server. I've updated the rest of the info above from phpmyadmin, current as of May 21 and added these pastebins today as well for the new data after having the server run for 2-3 days.

  • Memory consumption should go up over time. A database server that isn't using RAM is a database server that's either under-utilised or over-provisioned. There seem to be a lot of hard limits in your configuration. The low value of innodb_io_capacity has me wondering if your server has a spinning disk rather than SSD. The limits on the temporary tables and heaps may be unnecessary. There is also a lot of MyISAM settings in there. Are you still using any MyISAM tables?

    The server uses SSD at Dreamhost's cloud compute. We do have a few MyISAM tables, mostly for fixed, read-only data type stuff that never updates, like our list of IP-geolocation table (4M rows), list of cities/countries, zip codes, various tiny tables, etc. Probably 90% of our tables are innodb. All of the big stuff is innodb. I should probably add that our largest table is a products table with 3.2 GB, followed by supplemental product info table with 2.8 GB - both innodb.

Other details to consider for your instance,

OS SWAP SIZE of 11G rather than 0 SWAP to be prepared for 8G RAM upgrade - desperately needed for your activity level. When budget is available and 6 CPU's would be beneficial.

select_scan RPS of 10 indicates indexes are missing. Slow Query Log will have them listed. select_full_join RPS of 1 indicates indexes are missing. Use of log_queries_not_using_indexes will record them for you in your Slow Query Log.

There are more opportunities to improve performance.

Tuning quarterly has been proven to be helpful in identifying where the bottlnecks are after your best efforts this quarter.

    Thanks for looking into this, I greatly appreciate it. Please note that I recently converted all MyISAM tables to Innodb in all of my databases. Since then I've noticed the memory usage in the top report seems to be leveled off at around 2.9G and MySQL has been running 8 days straight without crashing yet. You provided edits to the variables above, do you have any advice on which variables I should remove from the full my.cnf file provided in the original post? (phase out any MyISAM stuff that might be using resources, but is not used anymore?)

    Unfortunately, after restarting MySQL with the changes above, the server ran out of memory and mysqld was killed by oom: "[1559745.478459] Out of memory: Killed process 570797 (mysqld) total-vm:5872644kB, anon-rss:3699176kB, file-rss:0kB, shmem-rss:0kB, UID:112 pgtables:8248kB oom_score_adj:". I reversed the innodb_buffer_pool_size back to "2000M" for now.

change settings in my.ini or mysql.ini also there is a CPU command in kernel or core of server that lets you allocate CPU resource in the amount of percentage you want. UTF8 is a variable length encoding.

If 4 bit per character isn't issue in terms of storagewise, you may consider;

UTF8 to UTF8MB4 (supports emoji and more characters) Also Please move from MyISAM to InnoDB. It is a lot faster and more productive and more efficient. The way it is now is too old school and very slow.

Table Maintenance Data integrity can be compromised if tables become corrupt. For InnoDB tables, this is not a typical issue. For programs to check MyISAM tables and repair them if problems are found, see Section 7.6, “MyISAM Table Maintenance and Crash Recovery”.

Unicode collations based on UCA versions higher than 4.0.0 include the version in the collation name. Examples:

utf8mb4_unicode_520_ci is based on UCA 5.2.0 weight keys (http://www.unicode.org/Public/UCA/5.2.0/allkeys.txt),

The default collation for utf8mb4 differs between MySQL 5.7 and 8.0 (utf8mb4_general_ci for 5.7, utf8mb4_0900_ai_ci for 8.0).

When the 8.0 client requests a character set of utf8mb4, what it sends to the server is the default 8.0 utf8mb4 collation; that is, the utf8mb4_0900_ai_ci.

utf8mb4_0900_ai_ci is implemented only as of MySQL 8.0, so the 5.7 server does not recognize it.

Because the 5.7 server does not recognize utf8mb4_0900_ai_ci, it cannot satisfy the client character set request, and falls back to its default character set and collation (latin1 and latin1_swedish_ci).
