I have a Windows SBS2011 installed. It has file sharing, Exchange and WSUS running off it.

WSUS console was, and always been, running slowly - I have no comparison with any other system, so I considered it normal; it was (and is) usable.

One day I noticed that WSUS database grew to 15 GB - surprising, but ok - I figured there must be a ton of things to remove (after all, I have some 15 PCs on the network).

I started with standard WSUS tools, but when selecting all the options at the same time it timed out again and again. I think I solved this by selecting just a single option for each run.

The I used the script from https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/6f8cde49-5c52-4abd-9820-f1d270ddea61#content - pasted this in SQL Manager and ran the query. Took a while, finished without errors.

So I went to "shrink file" - checked "Reorganize pages before releasing unused space" - Manager suggests that I can shrink to 11800 MB (not much of a shrink, but still better than before). Unfortunately, each time I try to run it, it ends with "Shrink failed for datafile 'SUSDB'; Lock request time out period exceeded".

I tried stopping IIS (on which WSUS is running), stopping every imaginable service that seemed related to updates, reloading the server and trying the same on fresh boot - to no effect.

I understand that there is some process accessing the database? If so: 1) how can I find what the process is 2) is it possible to take this DB offline and then shrink? I'm not worried about uptime

EDIT:

  • I strongly recommend not to shrink database files. In most cases this causes significant performance drops. You should never shrink databases regularly. If you are going to do it once, tell me if you did anything before (like dropping tables, removing data)

  • What are you trying to fix by shrinking the database?

  • WSUS performance, I figured that 14 GB database is the reason why it's running... so... slow... I mean, seriously, 14 GB of data for Win7, 8, 8.1, 10 patches for 15 PCs? Just.. come on?

  • The size of the database is highly unlikely to correlate with the speed of WSUS directly. Removing rows from history tables, etc, may speed up queries used by WSUS, however I suggest forgetting about the 3GB of space.

Edit based on reply:

Thanks for sharing your results. Your main write slowdowns are more likely due to your transaction logs from the brief analysis provided, and not your database size. Don't shrink. that is not going to help out at all and make things more fragmented. Read here for more background info on how shrink works which causes this. Your performance issues are caused by other factors per your results.

You have a highly fragmented transaction log as suspected from the number of VLFs returned. The analysis that your transaction logs are a major source of performance woes is backed up by the fact that you see 'WRITE_LOG' as the 3rd highest wait stat in your server, this is out of a few hundred metrics This shows several issues we should resolve first. Finally we see that your disk space isn't astronomic, and it has free space. Here is a quick background on why that is bad.

Next we see backupio and pageiolatch_sh and pagelatch_ex as well as io_completion. This shows that your system is suffering from poor disk performance currently. You probably have high disk read/sec and disk write/sec metrics in perfmon on your transaction log and data file. Here is a great guide showing you how to use Perfmon to troubleshoot sql performance issues.

Also, as you see backups are also high on the list which could be throwing off the statistics. If you wanted to be sure that in fact it is not backups polluting your metrics, you could copy the waitstat metrics somewhere, reset them, and collect the requested metrics from perfmon during regular and backup hours.

Transaction log pruning and monitoring disk metrics are going to give you the most performance gains for writes immediately, as well as make db restore faster. Below is how to fix the tlog VLF issue. Basically you want to make sure you checkpoint and your last VLF isn't active by doing a DBCC LOGINFO(); and seeing a status of 0. If you're in full recovery mode then make sure you are taking tlog backups, and wait for the backup. Then shrink the transaction log and grow it based on these guidelines. http://www.brentozar.com/blitz/high-virtual-log-file-vlf-count/

http://www.sqlskills.com/blogs/kimberly/8-steps-to-better-transaction-log-throughput/

Besides setting up perfmon and looking at these statistics, You will want to see if your transaction log is set to autogrow at the default of 1mb. You will want to change that to a different number to avoid VLF fragmentation. Typically if we don't know, a best practice is to strive around 50 VLFs per Kim Tripp. Here are some of the best practices to TLog management from her.

End Edit.

Per your comments it seems like you're looking at the total DB space which includes transaction logs. Please run the following commands and post the results so we can see what is taking up that space. SQL Express won't let your data files go over 10GB anyways so I suspect there's some log issues which is causing your performance issues. Typically 'database size' is never the actual issue, tertiary effects of it are which can be resolved.

Let's see how much space you are using in your DB, including log files, and the total database/log space allocated. This is a script by community member Glenn Berry:

-- Individual File Sizes and space available for current database
-- (Query 36) (File Sizes and Space)
USE <DBNAME>
GO
SELECT f.name AS [File Name] , f.physical_name AS [Physical Name],
CAST((f.size/128.0) AS DECIMAL(15,2)) AS [Total Size in MB],
CAST(f.size/128.0 - CAST(FILEPROPERTY(f.name, 'SpaceUsed') AS int)/128.0 AS DECIMAL(15,2))
AS [Available Space In MB], [file_id], fg.name AS [Filegroup Name]
FROM sys.database_files AS f WITH (NOLOCK)
LEFT OUTER JOIN sys.data_spaces AS fg WITH (NOLOCK)
ON f.data_space_id = fg.data_space_id OPTION (RECOMPILE);

Let's see how many VLFs you have.

USE <DBNAME>
DBCC Loginfo();

Please give us the rows returned by the 2nd query.

Finally, if you're having performance issues, have you been able to run PerfMon and collect metrics? If not, go to start - run - Perfmon.msc. Add:

Disk Sec/read
Disk Sec/write
Total CPU %
Total RAM usage

Those would be the initial metrics to look at. You could also list your total wait stats to see which ones you're waiting on the most to do a initial performance diagnostics by running:

select top 20 *
from sys.dm_os_wait_stats
order by wait_time_ms desc

Let us know! Good luck.

As you know, answers should be used for answers. I appreciate that you are attempting to gather a lot of info from the OP, that will likely help answer the question, so I won't vote-to-delete right away. Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if this "answer" gets deleted as "not an answer".

  • It's going to be too large to put this in the questions section. Hopefully OP get's back to us with the info so we can help him out via editing the answer to provide the final resolution for his issue. Otherwise if it get's deleted per the rules/culture of the StackExchange community that's understandable too. This was an 'answer' on how to properly start performance troubleshooting as that was his stated issue initially, and gives them the option to give back more info if they wish. Oct 19, 2015 at 21:03
  • Thanks for those questions! I updated OP with the data I gathered.

  1. Connect to the database in SQL Server Management Studio. Execute the following command in a new query editor window:

EXEC sp_who2

This should provide you with a list of processes on SQL Server. Find the lines which have your database name on them. These should provide you with the process that is attached to them.

  1. When you take your database offline, it is not possible to do a shrink.

But in general, it is not a good idea to shrink databases. You should provide sufficient storage for the database to grow. This will prevent the "jojo"-effect shrinking has: your database grows, you shrink it, the database grows, you shrink again and so on. Even worse, a database shrink causes massive index fragmentation. Paul Randall wrote a nice article about it, if you want more information.

  • The list just shows SQL Manager Studio and sleeping WSUS:wsusservice process. If you recommend against shrinking DB, that's fine, it's just that on a server shared by multiple services I wanted to at least improve WSUS performance. It's enough that Exchange consumes 20GB+ of RAM.

  • You can try to kill those processes via the sql command kill <processid>. Then try to run the shrink again if you still want to shrink. Oct 20, 2015 at 11:59
