I have only been using SSRS for a few weeks now and from what I have seen, I know that we create a dataset, define parameters (I do it by using a paramaterized stored procedure and linking that to a dataset so it automatically recognizes the parameters), and once they are typed, you hit the 'view report' button.

But I was wondering if there is a way to have a report generated as we type the parameters. For example, if, say, I have a LIKE in my main query for the dataset, which is linked to a parameter. So as the user types a few characters or even a single character, is there a way to have results appear as each character is typed without having to hit the 'view report' button?

If it is not possible in SSRS, what other softwares/options do I have to achieve this for data stored in SQL Server?

What is the use case for this? It looks like either a bad idea or the wrong tool for the job. – Tom V Nov 10 '15 at 15:29

Sounds like you want it to perform some sort of auto complete and dynamic execution. SSRS will not do this out of the box. You will either need to write a custom wrapper or purchase another reporting tool, as you suggested. – Steve Mangiameli Nov 10 '15 at 17:52
  • Thank you, you're right, that's what I want and there is no way it seems to do this out of the box. Tom V, you're correct as well, it seems now that it is indeed the wrong tool for the job. – Ravi Nov 12 '15 at 18:50
