We are storing our everyday full backup in remote storage. Everything seems to be working fine, but every seven day interval the archived folder size is much more than the everyday archived backup folder.

  • Database Server: MySQL Server 5.5.
  • Database Size: 150 GB
  • Archived dump folder size: Around 28 GB
  • Backup Tool: mysqldump
  • Backup Type: Full Backup
  • Backup interval: 24 hours.

Note:

  1. We are running a .bat file for backup scheduling.
  2. There are no other batch files other than the 24 hour interval scheduled backup.

But every day 7 day interval, the backup folder size increased to 85 GB. What is wrong in our system? There are no other scheduled jobs for 7 day interval, nor are there any other jobs running parallel.

Edit:

The script which we are using for backup is given below:

@echo off
set curr_date="%date:~4,2%%date:~7,2%%date:~10,4%"
mkdir "C:\MySQL_test\Backup_87\87_%curr_date%"

mysqldump -R -B -h xxx.xx.x.xx --user=root -pnopwd %1 --quick --single-transaction --disable-keys --max_allowed_packet=1G --all-databases 2> C:\errorlog.txt > C:\MySQL_Test\Backup_87\87_%curr_date%\%1%2.sql

We have backup for last 3 months, every 7th day, the size of the backup folder is 85 GB all other days around 28 GB.

  • Please reread the question and think about how much information you've given us. Basically nothing more than "every 7th day the backup size is larger although it should be around the same for every day. Oh, and we're using a script for this.". So, do you think we can help you with this? No. Maybe it would be a good idea to post the backup script. Maybe you can find errors that occured on 6 of 7 days or only on 7th day... – tombom Mar 21 '16 at 11:01
  • Your script doesn't compress and takes two parameters. In the 7th day do you use different parameters? Or is compression performed differently? – Giovanni Mar 21 '16 at 12:13
  • Actually, for compression we are running different script. This settings done by previous DBA. For this scenario I choose Xtrabackup tool, here I need to know, what is happening on 7th day, all are full backup but 7th day only varies. – rathishDBA Mar 21 '16 at 13:01

Did deeper into the script. It smells like you have daily "incremental" (not full) backups, plus a weekly full backup.

What is the value of %1?

-B and --all-databases are at odds with each other -- what gives?
