I've been following the instructions Microsoft provides to install SQL Server on an Ubuntu server here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/linux/sql-server-linux-setup-ubuntu

I do have sudo access but not sure if anything else would be needed.

All of the steps work fine up until I run sudo /opt/mssql/bin/mssql-conf setup, where I encounter the error:

No journal files were opened due to insufficient permissions

followed by:

Setting up Microsoft SQL Server

Enter the new SQL Server system administrator password:

Please check the setup log in /var/opt/mssql/log/setup-20170403-182345.log

for more information.

I have provided all of the log files in a .tar since there were a bunch within it, and I didn't want to have to make 7 or 8 pastebin links. If any other information is needed let me know!

EDIT 2:

I can run sudo /opt/mssql/bin/mssql-conf start-service and the server will start, but will close not too long after.

  • There wasn't anything helpful in the logs provided and it was missing the setup log (/var/opt/mssql/log/*) as shown in the commented output in your question. – Sean Gallardy Apr 4 '17 at 0:27
  • I know you said you have sudo, but have you simply tried installing as root? I mean open a shell window and su root, then run the commands from that window? – Max Vernon Apr 4 '17 at 0:32

@SeanGallardy I just added the output from "/var/opt/mssql/log/setup-20170403-182345.log" above to limit the size of my comment. That essentially tells me to check "/var/opt/mssql/log/core.sqlservr.04_03_2017_18_23_46.9513.log" which has also been added above. It also tells me to look at the .tar.bz file it outputs, which is in the .tar link I have there now. – user121106 Apr 4 '17 at 1:51
  • @MaxVernon I did installations both as my user and as root, both had the same results. – user121106 Apr 4 '17 at 2:06
  • @user121106 - Release Candidate 2 was just released. Is this still an issue? – Max Vernon Apr 19 '17 at 20:06
