I just recently started using MAMP, PHPmyAdmin, and wordpress. When I try to restart the server in MAMP PRO by pressing the server icon in top right corner (mamp pro), I get a pop up that reads the error: "Starting MySQL failed. MySQl couldn't be started. Please check the log files for more information.

The log files read the following:

  • Log says 2017-05-25 19:13:53 9486 [Note] InnoDB: Database was not shutdown normally! so you probably have killed MySQL or it crashed last time. If you don't wanna do recovering everyday, find out why MySQL did not shut down properly.

Try to change/add below entry in my.cnf and restart.

[mysqld]

innodb_force_recovery = 1

If this works, try to take a mysqldump and keep it safe side. And recreate a fresh installation with correct settings and remember to remove the entry innodb_force_recovery.

If this doesn't work, increase the value from 1 upto 3 and see if it works.

Since I'm not sure about the history of this server. You may need to verify your innodb_log_file_size set correctly as per recommended values.

  • Forcing recovery without knowing the root cause might result in data loss. Please perform a backup of you files, before you consider innodb_force_recovery.

  • If 3 is not enough I would suggest 4 - in my understanding, it is only dangerous for indexes. For many years the documentation considered 4 as a safe value. Mar 1, 2018 at 10:22
