I have installed MySQL 5.0 on a remote server over the internet and connected my JAVA application to it. It works fine, yet I see some delay retrieving results from the database compared to MySQL installed on same machine / local network. The ping time to my remote server is about 80ms. My question, how to tune MySQL settings (e.g. by my.cnf) and/or Linux settings in a manner that makes remote connections to MySQL faster?

  • How fast are you hoping to make it? If ping RTT is 80ms, it'll NEVER get any faster than that, unless you get a faster pipe. – Max Vernon Apr 19 '18 at 17:24
  • If it is a round trip that means 160ms but the delay I see on UI is much longer than 160ms. – W.M. Apr 19 '18 at 18:13

Why install MySQL 5.0 which is 15 years old - a bit longerr than your RTT? :-) – Vérace Apr 20 '18 at 6:09
  • Is it just one SQL statement? Does Java issue a bunch of setup queries that you don't see? – Rick James May 6 '18 at 23:02
