What are the steps for write ahead log protocol?

I know these are the steps, but I don't know the order they occur in.

a. Updated data is persisted on disk.

b. Data is updated in memory.

c. The log is persisted on disk.

d. The log of this update is written in the memory.

Im assuming this is the order with my limited knowledge it is this:

  1. Data is updated in memory.

  2. Updated data is persisted on disk.

  3. The log of this update is written in the memory.

  4. The log is persisted on disk.

Can anyone confirm, deny, or correct my logic?

  • You write the log ahead of the changes to disk. – eckes Feb 19 at 2:34
